H1N1 Death Toll Doubles Over Last Month; First Vaccine Trial Begins
The worldwide death toll from the H1N1 (swine flu) virus has doubled in the past month, reaching over 700, the WHO announced Tuesday, the AP/Google.com reports. "WHO did not give a breakdown of the deaths Tuesday. But as of last week, the U.S. reported 263 deaths, Canada reported 45 deaths and Britain had 29. According to WHO"s last update on July 6, there were 119 deaths in Mexico," the news service writes. "Yet even Tuesday"s figure of 700 deaths may seriously underestimate the true toll, experts say, because not all swine flu cases are being picked up due to testing limitations" (Jordans, 7/21).

Hackers Going After Medical Records
Hackers raided a server at the University of California, Berkeley last fall, stealing everything from Social Security numbers to immunization records in an episode that highlights one danger of moving health information from file cabinets to cyberspace, Forbes reports in a first-person account by one of the 160,000 victims. "Stealing medical data has become more attractive to hackers and identity thieves as banks and individuals have become more sophisticated about protecting credit-building information." One consumer group estimates that as many as 12 percent of digital security breaches target the medical industry.

Clinical Studies Validate Cancer Gene Delivery Platform: Landmark Publication Confirms Rexin-G Effectively Targets Metastatic Cancers
Epeius Biotechnologies stuns the medical and scientific communities with a dramatic demonstration of single-agent efficacy with its lead product, Rexin-G, for metastatic cancer. The landmark article (accessible online as of June 16, 2009 in Molecular Therapy, the Official Journal of The American Society of Gene Therapy, documents the results of two related studies using Rexin-G, a tumor-targeted anti-cancer agent designed to seek-out and destroy metastatic cancers that have spread throughout the body, while sparing normal cells and healthy tissues and organs. Following the FDA"s designation of Rexin-G as an Orphan Drug for the treatment of soft tissue sarcoma and osteosarcoma in 2008, the results of these two independent studies represent a major step toward gaining Accelerated Approval of Rexin-G for osteosarcoma in the United States.

Campaign Reminds Doctors Of 14 August Deadline For Licensing Decision - General Medical Council (GMC), UK

Doctors are being reminded to contact the GMC with their licensing decision through an advertising campaign launched yesterday, 1 August. Adverts will appear in the medical trade press throughout the first half of August as a final push to encourage doctors to respond to the GMC. So far, over 75% of doctors have responded to the GMC with their licensing decision. This equates to more than 171,000 doctors*. However, the GMC is keen to hear from the remaining 25% of the register as some doctors, such as researchers and academics, may not require a licence to practise. Professor Peter Rubin, Chair of the GMC, asks doctors, "We know how busy you are but you need to make an important decision. If you haven"t yet told us your licensing decision, you need to do so by Friday 14 August." Doctors who have already let the GMC know their decision need do nothing more; they will receive a letter from the GMC before licensing is introduced on the 16 November 2009. The GMC recently launched the Licensing help website for doctors needing assistance making their licensing decision. Doctors can visit http://www.gmc-uk.org/licensinghelp or call 0161 923 6277 for further information. *The GMC is receiving hundreds of responses to the licensing campaign daily; since the adverts went to press, the GMC has received a further 17,000 responses GMC
